Configure your warehouse structure in SmartWMS

2 min read

Setting Up Your First Warehouse

After creating your account, the next step is to configure your warehouse structure. This includes creating zones, locations, and defining your storage layout.

Understanding Warehouse Structure

SmartWMS uses a hierarchical structure:

Warehouse
├── Zone (e.g., Receiving, Storage, Shipping)
│ ├── Aisle
│ │ ├── Rack
│ │ │ ├── Shelf
│ │ │ │ └── Bin (Location)

Step 1: Create Your Warehouse

  • Navigate to Warehouse → Warehouses
  • Click + New Warehouse
  • Fill in the details:
- Name: Your warehouse name (e.g., "Main Warehouse") - Code: Short identifier (e.g., "WH-01") - Address: Physical location - Contact: Phone and email

Step 2: Create Zones

Zones help organize your warehouse by function:

  • Go to Warehouse → Zones
  • Click + New Zone
  • Common zone types:
Zone TypePurpose
ReceivingIncoming goods staging
StorageMain inventory storage
PickingFast-moving items for order fulfillment
ShippingOutbound staging area
ReturnsReturned goods processing
QuarantineItems pending inspection

Step 3: Create Locations (Bins)

Locations are the specific spots where products are stored:

  • Go to Warehouse → Locations
  • Click + New Location
  • Configure:
- Code: Location identifier (e.g., "A-01-01-01") - Zone: Select the zone - Type: Bulk, Pick, Staging, etc. - Capacity: Weight/volume limits

Location Naming Convention

We recommend a structured naming format:

[Aisle]-[Rack]-[Shelf]-[Bin]
Example: A-01-02-03
  • A = Aisle A
  • 01 = Rack 1
  • 02 = Shelf 2
  • 03 = Bin 3

Quick Setup: Use Templates

For faster setup, SmartWMS offers pre-configured templates:

  • When creating zones/locations, select Use Template
  • Choose from:
- Small Warehouse (< 500 m²) - Medium Warehouse (500-2000 m²) - Large Warehouse (> 2000 m²)

Verify Your Setup

After creating your structure:

  • Go to Dashboard
  • Check that your warehouse appears
  • Verify zone and location counts

Next Steps

With your warehouse structure in place, proceed to Import Products to add your inventory.
